Mildred's Farewell
“This young Brazilian artist and recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts makes her New York debut with “Mildred’s Farewell,” a short, mesmerizing video about her mother’s death. Its ghostlike forms drift convincingly among semi-abstract expanses of shadows, water, plants and reflections; cloudlike piles of various fibers; and fragmentary glimpses of faces and bodies, including a pair of seemingly bloody feet walking on broken glass. Experimental films from several decades are recalled, but with help from its subtle, ambient soundtrack (also by Ms. Leite), this work finds legs to call its own.
